The Blackout

I joined The Blackout at band practice and filmed the band performing on green screen.
I used that footage to create a custom VJ toolkit of live visuals that could be layered, remixed and played during their show.
3 hours at band practice.
Portable green screen. One light. Sony, iPhone and Insta360.
I filmed while they played.
From one green screen shoot, I created multiple distinct visual styles for different songs.
Each asset was cut out with a transparent background so the VJ could layer, remix and play them live.
From green screen to live show
Silhouettes are simple but very flexible. Their strong graphic shapes can be recoloured, layered and remixed to fit different songs, themes and visual identities.
The same capture method could create completely different results for each artist or band.
The portable green screen was intentionally small and easy to bring into band practice.
When instruments moved outside the frame, I used that limitation as part of the design, placing the footage inside an old TV to suit the band’s nostalgic black and white aesthetic.
1. Original artwork
The original HOPE album cover was 15 years old and too low resolution to scale cleanly across the dome.
2. Spatialised for the dome
I rebuilt the logo as a vector, then used the After Effects VR converter to shape it correctly for fulldome projection.
3. Colour and layering
I matched the vector colour to the original album artwork and used it slightly transparent so it could sit over the live visuals without overpowering them.
