CULTVR Community Workshop
A low cost, community led animation workshop where individual frames created by the public come together to form a single shared artwork. Designed to run with minimal facilitation, the project proves that simple rules can unlock strong, exhibition ready outcomes while trusting the creativity already within the community.
A set of simple rules guided the workshop, participants could choose either orange circles or blue waves, and colour inside or outside the logo. These clear constraints created freedom rather than limitation, giving people enough structure to feel confident, and enough space to be themselves without getting lost in possibilities.
The workshop was designed to work without my presence, so I created a clear set of rules that people could follow on arrival. CULTVR’s Lab is a shared space where the public often sit before a cinema or live XR event, and I felt people would naturally want to play. They were out for the night, open to distraction, and that instinct proved right.
The workshop was an instant success, with participants ranging from ages 7 to 65. Interestingly, we saw more completed entries when the workshop was not facilitated, showing how well the structure supported independent, confident participation.
To support the workshop in my absence, I created a short instruction video that played in the bar, helping people feel confident joining in on their own.
I also tested the workshop beforehand and added thicker Posca pens alongside the thinner ones, giving participants the choice between quick, bold marks or slower, more detailed work.
I was very grateful for the opportunity to turn these into a loops for the dome. The idea was to create a trailer that played before the cinema began, showing what the whole community had made.
This video example shows the logo in the dome. I would love to continue working on collective artwork, as for me this is incredibly exciting and beautiful.
“The way physical and digital techniques were brought together really reflects what we do.
The level of engagement throughout the workshop was inspiring and demonstrated how powerful our branding can be when placed in the hands of an active community.”
